Better keep your foot off that accelerator as you take your vehicle off to your Dartmoor car storage facility – new research has revealed that a record 1.2 million drivers had to attend a speed awareness course in 2015.
Figures from the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme show that in 2010, just over 447,700 motorists were caught speeding – so last year’s figures represent a 170 per cent hike on six years ago.
But does this mean that police are being more vigilant about stopping people from speeding or are people simply driving faster year on year? Well, it’s impossible to tell but there’s certainly no harm in going on a speed awareness course, especially if you’ve been driving for decades and need a bit of a refresher on the rules of the road.
In fact, it’s preferable to take one of these courses if you are caught speeding and police will often offer it as an alternative to penalty points and a fine – as long as your speeding offence is minor, of course.
You might have to let your insurance provider know that you’re going on a course at the request of the police but you won’t have your speeding offence recorded as a conviction, which will surely be a relief.
So the next time you’re hotfooting it down the Dartmoor country lanes to bring your classic car to our storage facility, make sure you keep an eye on that speedometer. The last thing you need is to be pulled over and given a ticking off for going too fast.
